Default Cycling Question again. Sorry!

Aye up

Just a quick question:

I have a 5 Gallon Tank that has been Cycling now for about 4 weeks. It has live sand in it and Live rocks and Internal Filters. Looks like I may be getting a 20 Gallon Tank. So the question is if I transfer the Live rock, sand and the pre made Nutri-Seawater, add the already established Filters from the old tank, Is it a case of Job done already with the Cycling?

Thanks

Hi Typhoon

Due to the size of the new tank im afraid its not the case, you need 1kg of rock for every 10 litres of water, so you would need more live rock to cope with the bioload of what your stocking, this will in turn cause another cycle once it is added. Out of curiosity what is in the internal filters, im asking because the bacteria that develop in them compete with the bacteria in the live rock, causing the live rock to not break down waste as well as it should. In marine tanks it is usually better to just use Live Rock and chemical filtration

Hope that helps

Dan

Dan its a Fluval Filter 50w I think and looks pretty powerful in the small tank! What is Chemical Filtration? Is this just letting nature do its thing with the bacteria in the Live rock and sand?

Thanks

oops sorry i forgot about this thread, chemical media is stuff like carbon and rowaphos (highly recomended! it removes phosphates which lead to bad algae). they are in a granual form which you just dump in a bag, stick in the filter or sump, and replace after a few weeks or so because it would of absorbed all the bad stuff it can
