Hi

First things first do you want to keep a reef tank (i.e with coral) or just live rock and fish?

Ok I will list the basic requirements needed:

Tank (bigger the better)
Skimmer (buy one that is for double your tank volume)
Powerheads x 2 you need water movement on the surface to oxygenate the water
Heater
Live rock (how much is depending on how much water your tank holds)
Sand
Lighting (halide etc, there are lots to choose from, it all depends on what you want to keep coral wise)
Water test kits, these will need to be used during the cycling process
Thermometer
Refractometer (to measure salinity)
RO Water or RO unit to make your own RO water
Salt if making your own

There is so many other things you could buy, but I would suggest starting with the basics and see how you get on, you can get computers to control your temperature etc.

Check out my website, I have quite a bit of information on marine tanks www.vicky—farrell.webs.com

Hope this helps

Vicky

Going by what I've been told you need a tank in excess of 30 gallons so don't bother looking at picos, nanos or the small side of medium tanks.

Yep the bigger the tank the easier it is to keep it stable

My tank is 200L and is pretty easy to look after now (after a year of hard graft LOL)

It is so rewarding to look at though, my boyfriend and I spent ages just looking at the tank yesterday watching everything, he kept pointing out "whats that", "whats this" LOL.

The one I'm setting up is only 128l (Boyu TL-550) but I can't wait to get to the live rock stage and watch things start to happen. I'm still buying stuff at the moment, just finished reconditioning and upgrading a 2nd hand RO unit. Being able to produce my own RO feels like a milestone
