Default fish

i used to keep goldfish for a while when i was younger, they lived supprisingly long for fairground fish (one died at seven the other at 8/9), and i was think about getting some more fish, so what freshwater fish would you reccomend, i want something abit more exciting than gold fish, and what size tank?

if you are thinking of coldwater, there are some awsome looking fancy goldfish around. but the tank size depends on the amount of fish but i dont keep cold water so not really sure on the right size tanks for them.

if you are looking for tropical fish there are LOADS of different types, you could go for chiclids, or things like oscars, angel fish and gouramis but if you are just starting out, things like tetras, guppies, mollies, platys, swordtails come in all different colours so are nice to look at and dont need tonnes of attention.
for the tank size, with guppies ect they dont get very big so you can have quite a small tank but if you go for oscars it needs to be quite large as they get big.
hope this helps

Coldwater:

Fancy Goldfish: 40l per fish, overkill filtration needed and you will need a tank of 80-100l for just 2.
Common, Comet and Shubunkin: 60l+ needed per fish due to a potential size of 1ft fully grown, tanks need to be long and deep and filtration needs to be overkill.
Minnows(WC,GWC,MWC):These guys apply to the same rules as tropicals, they get to 4cm and need to be in a group of atleast 5 preferably 7.

Tropical all depends on type if your a beginner I would stick with live bearers as they are very Hardy, can be very pleasing on the eyes and have very few demands. I currently have Platys and they show plenty of personality and they also breed like rabbits, hence the large amount of fry I now have.
