I believe the 'professionals' use very thin glass tanks, put the fish in them and then submerge them into the tank. Needs very high quality and clean glass.

Either that or a great deal of patience!

Patience, good lighting and lots of luck seem to be the main components of a good shot.

The other things that really help are: a tripod or something you can rest your camera on, a polarizing filter (takes all the glare and reflection out of the glass) and not essential - but it really does help - a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses.

I spend far too much time taking pictures of fish, and I'm forver getting blurred streaks of colour which resemble fish..they don't like sitting still for me

But sometimes they behave:

Thanks I've only had him a couple of days - the chap I got him off said he had "a 7" plec, ram and barb"..turned out to be a 13" plec, angel, golden gourami, tiger barb and hatchet fish!

And good to see another Nikon user and also some great photos! Love the expression of the plec.

I used a Nikon D300 most of the time, with a 50mm f/1.8 lens.
