The tank is to small for discus, its about a 15 UK gallon, discus need to be in groups of about 5 so you should aim for a 50 gallon tank min. Baby ones will cost you about £12.50 each at about 2.5" from a good breeder. You will need a good filter.

you also have to be quite careful with your water ph etc, they are more sensitive to it than other fish.

yeah, hard water is good for young discus IMO as the extra minerals etc seem to benifit them. Also its ok for adults but soft water is a must for breeding really, is poss with hard but , much eaiser with soft. A peat(sp) wont soften hard water, it will make soft water softer though, i think.

Hard water with discus, are you crazy?
Discus come from the peat-filled slow moving amazon, the ph is low and the water is soft..
Discus do indeed get big, and are an excellent display fish with about 50 cardinals and 25 corydoras in a large 55/75g tank..height of the tank is also important...you also may want to consider RO units.

Yes i'd say RO water is a must with discus, many LFS also sell it from anywhere between £2.50 and £4 for 25 litres.

you can keep them in tapwater as long as long as it isn't extremly hard, but you wont be able to breed them

They're also fairly aggressive - if you're starting with babies, get a group, never add 'just one more' fish as the group will probably kill it, never add smaller ones to larger ones, they'll kill them too.
The group may settle as a group, or they will whittle themselves down (by bullying and if you don't take out the bullied one - killing) to a pair.

They may look angelic...
