hi all, i have 1 bosc and 2 emporer scorpians, is it worth breeding my own stock for food, or not do you feel? if so, what species, numbers, would be most ideal? as long as i dont have something that can get out and overtake the house - ie a cricket that'd taunt me for weeks cos i cant find it, as u always get 1 bloody noisy in a silent batch... lol
thanks in advance |

roaches are great, easy to breed, and dont smell.
Id recommend blaptica dubia roaches, they grow to around 2inches. You could feed the smaller ones to your scorps, and the bigger ones to your bosc. If you google them, you will find some good care sheets. |

I've worked out that I spend about £40 on electricity breeding roaches and £10 on food for 10000 roaches per year.
So for £50 a year I've got a continuous food supply going. It did take about half a year to get my colony set up and with dubia it takes twice as long which is quite a hassle. Ontop of that you have to regulary clean and feed them. Some people feed fresh fruit as much as every day.. All you have to do is work out how much you would roughly need per year and how much that would cost to buy from shops and compare it to breeding roaches yourself. Based on the prices I charge for roaches, for 50 pounds somebody could buy 6 speperate orders of 100 roaches. So I would say for those needing up to 50 roaches per month it would work out cheaper and alot easier buying roaches as you need them but if you need more than 100 roaches per month it might be worth looking into breeding some in the future. PS: it's not worth breeding crickets and roaches are nutritionally better anyway so what you have heard is right. Roaches are great. Last edited by Blackmelo; 08-02-2009 at 07:00 AM.. |
