Its a nice idea, but surely that wont make the RSPCA go away? It will just mean "we" have an organisation to voice our side of the story...but don't we already have that with the likes of the FBH etc etc?

The RSPCA as an organisation isn't just going to change its mind over-night and leave our hobby alone, or be intimidated into keeping quiet by a rival organisation. The RSPCA needs to be educated on reptiles and responsible and well known keepers/breeders in our hobby need to offer up that education. If a useful dialogue can be opened up then surely that is to the advantage of all parties concerned?

One would assume that the RSPCA (like most businesses/organisations) is run by relatively intelligent people i.e. not the kind of folk who arbitrarily adopt a certain position and won't change their minds even in the face of evidence to the contrary. When it comes to reptiles, the RSPCA are definitely out of their comfort zone and its probably this lack of knowledge on reptiles, and their corresponding tendancy to view reptiles in the context of how mammals should be kept, that is at the root of their dislike of our hobby. Rather than trying to shout them down we need to work with them to make them better equipped to really tell the good from the bad when it comes to reptiles.

Just my thoughts

Stuart

There are plenty of reptile rescues. The RSPCA is too well established to just bump out of the way without serious resources. Reptile rescues are usually self funded, with little to no way of raising money. Tortured iguanas makes little money compared to cute puppies on TV. Without the money to start up a huge advertising campaign you don't get donations. Meaning that every penny comes from the rescuers profit.

And when I'm talking about money, consider that the RSPCA have millions sitting by (yes, millions) to be spent on advertising, to make them more millions. They have millions to spend on law cases and prosecuting, and are given a respect by the government, council and police, because of their high standing (because they have acrued such masses of money...)

Unless someone wins the lottery and dedicates every penny to evolving a new style of reptile rescue, there is no way that the rescues in peoples houses and the back of shops existing solely on the goodwill of a few people, could ever do the RSPCA's job for them.

And to be honest, considering it is a full time job full of heartache, no pay and little reward.... how many applicants do you think there will be for the job?

Sign me up

As long as there are no rules saying we can't beat someone senseless for being an idiot.
Would make the heartache of the job a little easier sometimes I should imagine.

Not too sure about the green uniform though, could I be an Amel Cornsnake instead? You could have lots of different uniforms!
