Default Extra advice on importaing from india

A good friends of mine (Indian) who has kept various reps and bread them for years, moved to the uk a few years ago. Upon meeting me he has got back into rep keeping after previously thinking it was illegal in the UK.

Now, he has been offered from contacts in India a very vast about of snakes and lizards, has got permission and the paperwork to prove so, to ship said animals out of India. He's been asking me for advice on the legalities etc but i am now running dry of information.

As such, what is needed this side?? What paper work do we need?? What the best transportation method?? We have presently been discussion flying the animals over or doing the process by boat. More then likely they will be flown over so what complication are we considering meeting?? What advice can you offer??

As much information as you can give me would be amazing.

Thanks in advance.
Jay

To the best of my knowledge there is no legal trade out of India for live reptiles and amphibians, it was prohibited back in the 70’s. India has very strong animal protection laws, in terms of exports. You can kill as many as you like, but export them live, even captive bred animals.

I went to India in 1993....and saw lots of wildlife and did a little bit of field herping.

I also asked lots of questions and it was certainly illegal back then.

he'll be able to ship as many as he wants very cheaply..

As long as he only send the skins and nothing else.

this is one of the things that annoys me about the "WC is evil" posse. The quotas allowed for skins (aka dead reptiles) far far outweights any quotas in place for exportation of live animals.

hmmmmmm, ponders. That interesteing this guy is deffently adamint he can legally export live reptiles out of india.

Could it be that he's shipping to a neighbouring country and then moving them to the UK??

Not know much about the importing situation in general im dont know much baout how it all happens.

Say they were comiung over from Africa (example) what paperwork would i need this end to recieve the animals, and what legal provisions will i need. As in, will i just be able to go and collect said parcel?? wil i have to pay import tax upon collection?? etc.

it would be terrible if a translation issue resulted in reps being killed and there skins sent over... that would blow.

thank you dean.

Yep my mate indian in the uk though his contact from when he was in india has got this set up but asked me to help with detials this side since he's only recently got invilved with UK reptiles.

Im trying to get hold of my mate now and to see what he says about it. As apparently it was all sorted on the indian side and he just wanted me to check about the laws and other issues regarding this side of the transaction.

The discussion was also about live animals.
