Question about DWA

Can anyone tell me is it possible to find out who has DWA in our local areas.Is it possible to veiw a list of who has what and what is kept?

Its only out of interest really and to find out what DWA animals are being kept in the local area.I know there are a few areas like my own council that point blank refuse to give out DWA licenses but after reading a newspaper atical a couple of weeks ago it has come to our local attention that there are 10 wild boar being kept in our area that i am sure you had to have a DWAL to keep them.

only way you could would be to contact all local councils and ask who keeps what.

and yeah wild boar are on the DWA list.

Its just iknow of people in my area that have applied for DWAL in the past only to have to wait months and months to no avail.It was all for venomous reptiles and i have even been told by one local councilor that they will not be given out.Then tosee a local paper carrying a story of what exotic species were being kept in Essex with a list of the animals and someone in my area Tendering has 10 wild boar but there is no-one that i can find locally that has been able to get the DWAL even though they have applied for it in the past.The closet bourough to us that will allow it is Colchester and they have no problem issuing it at all.I know people in Colchester that already have vipers,adders,rattlesnakes and gila monsters as well as dwarf caimen etc and it was just a query if it was possible to find out exactly what was kept locally or possibly for people to get in contact with DWA holders with the possibility of training in venomous species.Although i would not keep DWA species due to having young children(at the moment) it may be handy to learn to deal with these species on the basis of with all of them in the country now you never know if you are going to come accross an escapee at any time.I know the best form of defense against these stunning animals is not to go near but we all know that in some cases this is just not possible and i for one would rather be taught how to deal with potentially lethal animals rather than just wing it.

Seeing the amount of DWA animals listed just got me thinking what if????

Councils cannot give out personal information like that as it is in direct violation of the Data Protection Act.

I see what you are saying about data protection Pam but also what about our right to know that we could be potentially living next door to someone keeping dangerous animals as well.

Surely we have a right to know what is being kept around us.

For me personally i would much rather live next door to someone who kept 100 venomous snakes that someone who kept 10 free roaming wild boar.As the snakes would be kept under lock and key.Ok wild boar would also be kept this way but they do burrow under things and also break through fences and hedges.

If the applicant meets the terms of the D.W.A.A then the council is breaking the law should they refuse a license.

DPA is to protect both sides. You might be fine with having a neighbour keeping 100 deadly snakes because they're kept under lock and key. Now imagine if the neighbour on the other side found out that you kept 1 harmless snake.
that neighbour might not know that your harmless snake is harmless but to them its a 'snake' and could eat them in their sleep.

If its made public who's keeping what it could cause a lot of problems for people when they're doing nothing wrong.

I would never want my neighbors to know, there is no problem at all though im fully licensed insured all the animals are under lock and key with no chance of escape theres no reason for anyone to know.

The applicants do meet the requirements for the license but in the 6 cases i know of the license has never gone past the stage of initial application as it has taken so long for procedure to be followed this is the way Tendering Borough Council work it.They do not refuse the license they just dont get round to the procedure of issuing it.

Even my "Harmless" snakes are kept under lock and key and i do not hide the fact from any of my neighbours that i keep Boas and Burmese.In fact i have educated many people over the years with my snakes.

I see what you are saying Si but surely you would rather help to educate people than have people worrying about what you keep and can it escape.I know i would if i were keeping a venomous species.
