My home made rack has clear tubs which let in quite a lot of light when facing the window.... Ironically its inhabitants are primarily nocturnal! As stated by someone earlier, so long as the animals needs are fully met, the rest is aesthetics. More efficient than individual viv's.

Some animals will be more than happy in a stack rather than in a big viv and others will be the total opposite. Depends on the species. I would say it's cruelty for some animals and completely fine for others.
