Default Colchester Zoo

Me and the wife took the kids to Colchester Zoo today, it's been a few years since we last went and still enjoy it, they have some stunning animals with very very nice enclosures.

I was however very dissapointed with the lack of reptiles they have, they seem to be scattered all over the zoo in different areas. They have a stunning pair of Rhino iggys in an absolutley fantastic open front enclosure.

We missed the 1130 cold blooded display in the theatre so made the 4.30 show and was all excited as you can imagine. I was like a kid fidgetting in me seat. Anyway, 2 keepers come out and start talking and say that they will be showing 3 animals for the display, well I coldn't beleive what I saw, one had a hissing cockroach and the other had a African land snail, a cockroach and a snail, WTF was this all about, how they managed to talk about them 2 things for so long beats me. Then, they put them away and bring out a 5ft female albino burmese, very nice snake, great temprament and she spoke about that for a while, all was going well and she said that burms can grow to up to 20ft then said said, cos this is an albino, it will only get another couple of foot longer 7/8 ft albino burm, yeah right maybe at a year old.

Apart from that, the zoo was pretty good and I am shattered.

Rob

sorry to intrude on your thread but has anyone been to or heard anything about Paignton zoo? I's never been to Paignton before, it's way down South, Devon i think. Apparently the zoo there is quite large, I'm hoping for a nice invert section, most zoos have the old insect house these days.

If not I'll report on conditions there, a harsh critic I'll be!

I went last year and did a 'shadow the keeper' day there. I got to go into the Komodo enclosure and had an awesome tour of some of the reptiles and had a real long chat with the head keeper, he was awesome.

Real nice zoo
