Default name change

dont you just hate it when the latin names of snakes change when (in my opinion) there was nothing wrong with the sodn ones thay had in the first place . I can understand where sub-species are reclassified so as to offer a clear method for deferentating the animals of the genus but then there are things that cheese me off like chondros changing and then corns and now retics . What was wrong with Python reticulatus??? it looks like a python to me so why not call it one ? this new name Broghammerus reticulatus just seems a bit odd to me . Fair enough it has been proposed since feb but i still dont like it . I am sure the americans will be made up though hahaha

It may be slightly annoying but there are scientists who spend years tidying up taxonomics. Scientists used to find a new species and name it there and then, now its not up to them so we get a clear idea of how things are related, when and where they were found etc. Some species have more than 1 scientific name, with some marine species having over 20 as they were found in different places and no one bothered to see if they had already been found.

It happens occasionally for many types of animal.

I reckon it coincides with taxonomists hitting their overdraft limit

i believe the americans will benefit from it as their proposed plans to ban the hobby with respect to retics will have to have the docs ammended and then the new docs will have to make their way through parlament again so it kind of resets the clocks in a way and puts the process of banning retics back to square 1 .

i read on bobs forum , it's something to do with dna , and them being related to the timor python (Broghammerus timoriensis), bit of a pain , but once a retic , always a retic ! makes no diffrence to me

what's wrong with Python reticulatus?

It's a reticulated python. It makes sense.

It sounds like a Dwarven word...

You may all hate the new name, but if Retics were on the list for banning where you live, and by changing the name you could throw such a spanner in the works in order to be able to keep hold of your snakes, at least for a while longer, then I'm sure you would do so without a second thought.

The UK seems to follow the USA trend after a while, so are you retic owners not at all concerned about the States trying to ban them? No one has bothered to pick up on that fact at present, which is something I find surprising. If I owned a retic, I would be searching the net, and asking questions on it, in order to have some awareness if/when the time comes where it will affect my animals.

Mo.
