Question Young Keepers? How supportive are your parents?

Im 15 and my family HATE all animals especially reptiles and exotics ;( which is very sad i think. i pay for all the food and everything to feed my pets and my parents usualy refuse to get someting i need from the shop like crickets, even if ther passing by. whenever i mentioon anything to do with reptiles they go off on one. (eg. my spider hasnt eaten in 2 years).

so for all the younger reptile keepers , how supportive are your parents with you keeping reptiles?

Not a teenager anymore but i remember how long it took for me to get a snake. My mum hated them. They let me have a gecko early on. But then I got rats and my mum was allergic (never had a problem with other furry critters) so I said I wouldnt get rid of them as they were my pets and she said if you get rid you can have a small snake. I got the snake first (Cathy the cornsnake) so she couldnt back out and got rid of the rats to a friend. Blackmail works everytime. My mum loves snakes now and looking back she couldnt see why she had an issue. They were easier and cleaner to look after than all the cats, dogs and rabbits we had.

I had a lot of problems with my "obsession" when i was younger. but i didn't get any of my own animals till i had my own place, my own income, and was 100% sure i could look after them.
My dad still hates them, although his partner loves them. my mum is so fascinated by them and cant see the problem with having them now, but in a way i'm glad they made me wait to get them. i appreciate they just wouldn't risk me not taking care of them properly.

My mum didn't really used to be keen,
but now she is very involved with my reptiles.
I pay for all Equiptment, Housing and Reptiles, but then
my reptiles Pay for the electric and heating, and transpot to
get food etc. I wouldn't have the rep's i have if my mum wasn't
involved, so i think im lucky.
Also, did you say you havn't fed your spider in 2years?

No, his spider hasnt eated for 2years.. very common with spiders

My rents hate everything to do with reptiles and furries. But aslong as there in my room, i pay for them, she doesnt mind. But there's a limit on which ones though.

I'm also 15. My dad doesn't mind too much as he keeps turtles but my mum HATED the idea of me getting anything to do with reptiles. I now have a map turtle and a leopard gecko but she won't have anything to do with them and they have to be kept in my room.

Although saying that... I have noticed her sneaking into my room from time to time to look at them

as a parent i would have to say i would support my kids with whatever they wanted to do. i think it teaches them to be responsible, and how to look after things. and i dont see the hastle in picking up crix and hoppers. i am into snakes, but even if i were not i would still be supportive.

My parents are very very supportive! My mum was a bit apprehensive at first but they gave it a chance and didn't say flat-out no. A few years on... my mum and dad now have 9 cresties (and counting) plus a carpet python . There's no way I'd have as many snakes and lizards as I do now, I'm just glad they gave them a chance lol.
