Legally you don't need anything except in some counties they require you to have done the Pet Store Management qualification in order to obtain a pet shop license.

Aside from that there are no formal qualifications needed. Experience helps, but plenty of people open up pet shops without that too

good and bad thing. Good that the hobby is growing but bad in that 'some' pet shops are just jumping on the exotic band wagon boom to try and profit and cash in on the pets but not having any real interest in the animals themselves and just look at the mullah sign. Think thats how its spelt. I am glad that more and more people are getting into inverts and reptiles but at the same time there are always a couple bad apples that appear.

well if you go through threads there have been a few people asking about owning pet shops. For starters even for a small shop you need about £100,000 loan to get your shop up and running. Then you have to pay your staff, buy foood for animals, get supplies, electrictiy bills it all adds up at the end of the day. I'm 16 and all i'm going to do is when i get a house convert a loft or a bedroom into a reptile room and make a website and just advertised like that. So much cheaper

Well I set up my shop with a £10k loan and £5k savings so I think £100k is a bit of an over estimate
