The treatment of animals is nothing to do with trading standards.

If they were selling beardies as super flying beardies then you'd need trading standards.

You need to contact the body that issued the pet shop it's licence.

Trading standards are not there to look out for animal welfare.

The correct people to contact are the licensing department of the council for whatever region the shop is in. It is only these who can revoke the license which allows the shop to sell livestock.

They could additionally remove the ability for the shop to sell reptiles, and still allow them to sell other animals.

Trading standards cannot stop the shop from selling live animals or do anything about the condition of the animals, or remove them from the care of the shop.

Pet Shop Licence

The Local Authority issues pet shop licences under the provisions of the Pet Animals Act 1951.

The licence can stipulate a number of conditions to secure the following objectives:
  • that animals are kept in accommodation suitable in respect of size, temperature, lighting, ventilation and cleanliness
  • that animals are adequately supplied with suitable food and drink and are visited at suitable intervals
  • that animals are not sold at too early an age
  • that all reasonable precautions are taken to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
  • that appropriate steps will be taken in the event of an emergency

***Is that any use or are you talking about a shop in SW2? If you give me the name of the borough I can probably find the contact info you need to report it...one of (the only) advantages of being a librarian...and getting asked this kind of stuff on a regular basis...lol ***

I think theres only one reptile shop in coventry that i know of and it has kids serving so must be them .
I would only go there in emergencies as they are way over priced on everything !!!

Theres one near me that is just opening up, it was originally a furries pet shop, but she has just started to fill her stock with reptiles.....
So she's got in a tortoise in a normal enclosed viv - no UV
Leopard Gecko's in an empty viv no hide just calci sand - no UV
An adult rat snake who has been in there weeks with retained shed on its tail, witch has now gone black about an inch. I advised her weeks ago on what to do, and its still in the same state it was. It is in a viv with no heat mat or heating. All I can see it a normal unguarded lightbulb. It is also surrounded by small furries in cages.
And she's still filling the shop up, will be ALOT more reps in there aparently in a couple of weeks.....
