Default What are the benifits to keeping reps in captivity?

Right I have another question as it states in the title. I have googled it and all I can find are reasons for not keeping reps in captivity which I have to admit is quite sad. Surely there are benifits to the reptile for keeping them in captivity does anyone know of any facts that it benifits the reptile? Or were I can find any good reasons to keeping reps.
Thanks

Healthier, longer lived animal with no predators and every needs catered for.

That is assuming they're kept optimally of course

Conservation-hundreds/thousands of species are suffering from destruction of their natural habitats, by keeping them in captivity we are helping to keep the numbers up and give them healthier, happier lives!

I agree with that (as I keep reps) but is this just our opinion or is it a fact?

Sorry to keep asking it's just for a project on doing on "keeping reps as pets"

surely keeping, studying and learning about any animal is a good thing? and like has been said the animal is kept away from predators and offered all the food it needs.

Some do try to keep bloodlines and landraces pure, but unfortunately with the popularity of morphs and the potential profits that can be made from them not many seem to nowadays, It's one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of hybrids and morphs in general, give me locale specific stock any day over a hypo-amelanistic-anerytheristic-super dwarf-leatherbacked-xanthic-platinum-super-bumblebee-spiderfronted het for caramel, pinstripe, paisley, tartan and raspberry-ripple burmese python x bearded dragon and I'll be a happy man

Longer lives - Yes because they do not have to cope with parasites and they are not hunted by other animals.

Healthier - Debatable one Many snakes in captivity are overweight as we tend to spoil them with food. There again many in the wild are probably underweight for the opposite reason.

Conservation - Bit of a nonsense unless the animals have specifically bred for that in perfect conditions. The animals kept in a home should never, ever make it back to the wild.

The reality of it is that the only reason we keep our animals is because we want to... it's as simple as that. Our animals are pets and have the same status as any other pet.

Longer lives generally applies to captive animals. There are always exceptions to this though. I think Chameleons live longer in the wild for example.

The amount that are caught for the demand of the pet trade doesn't help conservation really. Thats a bad thing.
