ive applied at a rep shop anddidnt get the job and nowapplied at ano reptiles garden centre pet department. I don't think shops are bad i just think the prices for reptiles are..and it depends on friendlinessand thecondition and health of the reps.I think leopard geckos and crested geckos are ok for a firsttime reptilebut thats it gecko wise.

I find our beardies more easier to look after then the geckos, specially the leopard gecko. That might just be because she bad tempered and not too keen on the handling. my fat tailed is alot more laid back and has long has hes fed warm and his humiditys ok hes happy without much fuss.

Its the staff that make the shop, good staff =good shop.
As for geckos some species of geckos make good first pets but not others, depends which it is!

its like all things there are some good shops and some bad.
I live near the living rain forest and that a fab shop great set up, loads of difernet stuff higher end things like pastel and albino royals, really friendly knowledgable staff who will chat with the customers. It is a bit pricey but I always think it costs more to run a shop then sell reps from home. In newcastle where i am from there is the reptile house and its shocking really really expensive £700 for a brb which was 6 foot being kept in a 2 foot tank with another brb, dirty cages, bloated mice in cages and the staff who are all friends and family of the owner do not have a clue so are no help what so ever |

I agree that good staff make for a good shop but you also need to consider the turn over of stock and how often something different come in and then if the staff have the knowledge for the stock they have.If the staff are friendly and competant then it will make for good sales. If the shop has a good variety of reptiles, equipment and knowledge then it makes for a good shop.
As for geckos the only one i would say is good for a beginner is the leo because they do not need uv and are fairly forgiving on husbandry any of the others in my book is a no no.I would always try to sell a beardie over a leo though for the pleasure a new keeper would have with its daytime antics |

our pet shop isnt too bad but its got a few flaws in its set ups. Its got a poorly looking sand boa and a skinny littl beardie that could do with being taken off their hands though. The staff aren't very knowledgable but they are friendly an are happy to give the animals lots of attention an food. its just things like unsecure heatmats an no basking bulbs.
