Default Future prohibition of Madagascar wild fauna export?

There are persistant rumours here about Madagascar being about to forbid the international trade of many native species, including chamaeleons, mantella frogs,leaf-tail geckos, painted geckos, day geckos, dumeril boas...

So maybe soon ,the Madagascan herpetofauna will be fully protected ,and only specimens already captive-bred will be found on the market, just like what occurs with australian reptiles.

Can you confirm or deny these rumours with precise data and quotations from official sources?I couldn't find much data on Google. Thanks for help.

leaf-tail geckos are banned from being brought from madagascar into the EU yes. they went EU annexe B and Cites 2 last year

they can be taken from Mada to the USA, and from the USA to the EU, but only supposed to be CB specimens coming into the UK/EU now

don't know about the others..

Im completely in agree with it I think with the amount of captive bred through professional breeders and reptile hobbyists for them to thrive is the best way. No need for anymore biopiracy and poaching.

i thought Madagascar regularly banned all exports evry few years? At least I think I read that somewhere. To give the animals chance to recuperate. Might be totally wrong though!

as for the other species i could not tell you, but this time its the EU has banned import, not that Mada has banned export

this was after they went cities 2 EU B

spider mad - there are not many in captivity and they are hard to breed..

leaf tailed geckos live in the primary forest on Mada..

its forecast that within 20 years.. 85% of this forest will be lost..

if they don't come out of the wild into captivity, they will be extinct within a few generations.. their generations, not ours..

sure. leave WC alone when they have somewhere to be wild in.. but when the island is being destroyed by mankind.. something has to happen to them...
