Not really sure what it's got to do with reptiles..............but one or two rivers in England have a 'Right of Navigation' which means you don't need a license of any sort (River wye for example). for some others you need to join the British Canoe Union BCU | British Canoe Union | which will give you access to a bit more but for lots of rivers it's not allowed.

Correct, no license needed at all on the river wye. Can canoe anywhere from Hay-on-Wye all the way down to Chepstow ( a long way, take a few days) Canoeing the wye gives details of where to launch, where to camp and distances etc..

Interesting thread, I didn't know there was no license for the Wye, I'll have to give it a try sometime. Here on the Thames we have to have a license for any type of boat, from the smallest coracle to the biggest cruiser, I just renewed 2 of my 3 licenses.

I can highly recommend kayaking down the Wye, I did it years ago and it was great fun.

There is a public 'Right of Navigation' since an Act of Parliament in 1662, it also covers the River Lugg which is a much smaller tributary river. In the summer it is VERY popular with canoeists and to a lesser extent kayakers.
I think that if you join the BCU it covers you for all the other rivers & canals for which a license is needed (could be wrong on that though, I only canoe on the Wye ,it's only5 mins from the house or on the sea).

Yes, especially if you camp overnight next to one of the pubs

Yes it does more or less. I was a member for a year but it didn't really work out for me, the problem was that although as a BCU member I was licensed for any of the rivers they cover, in any canoe or kayak, I did actually have to be in the boat myself.
I have a canoe and a skiff and we often take both out on the Thames at the same time, which meant that as the BCU member I always had to be in the canoe and the skiff still had to have a Thames license. With the Thames license it's the boat that's licensed, so anyone can use it with the owners permission.
As we mainly use our boats on the Thames we just have Thames licenses for all of them now, which is why I'm interested in being able to canoe on the Wye without having to buy yet another license!
There was a program on the Community Channel a while back about canoeing the Wye, it looks great especially the upper reaches.

It is great fun from Hay down to Ross (not lots of rapids, just enough of a current so you don't have to paddle much!), gets a bit slower below that apart from a little set of rapids near Symmonds Yat, still pleasant for touring though. Most of it's length it flows through some very nice countryside, excellent for touring and camping wild and some nice pubs either on the bank or a few hundred yards from the river.
