Default Would this work as subtrate?

I've just made a post about excavator clay in the lizard section but then had this idea.

If I used clay to make a substrate, paint it, then seal it with PVA, would this be safe? Would a heat mat work through it? Would the PVA melt?

Is this a dumb idea?

sounds good but not sure if it would work 1st thing is that clay does weigh a lot also as clay dries out it cracks and crumbles pretty easily.
