Question Ventilation...

Hiya guys,

If i can turf my darling flatmate out ill be making my CWD a shiny new viv within the next few months, ive got all the dimentions etc sorted out and i was looking into the ventilation, id like to put 7 of these (from the lovely looubylou211) around the top of the viv:

I think im pretty good at DIY for a girl, but i cant think for the life of me how you make a hole for these? surely its too small and tight to use a jigsaw? Can you take your wood to B&Q and get them to drill the perfect sized hole? Or can you buy drill bits big enough?

Any ideas? cheers guys

You will need a 70mm hole cutter and also correct abour to fit cutter so you can mount it in drill.

a hole cutter as previously mentioned, or draw ur circle (jar bottoms etc are always good) drill a good sized hole just inside the line (in the hole area) and pop in a jigsaw brrrrrrrrr brrrrrrrrrrr brrrrrrrrrrrrrr done deal

if u dont have a jigsaw u can buy a pad saw for about a fiver or less (hebay) its like a manual jigsaw and not as prone to lopping off digits either.

Ive been reliably informed by a customer that the lid of a wax worm tub is an exact same size so wud work well as a template. They are 70mm diameter, but I would recommend buying a hole cutter which attaches to the drill, it will give a much more professional finish!........

also if your going for a holesaw, remember to get the right sized arbor for it the larger sizes of hole require a bigger arbor , and then also make sure that it will fit in your drill .. unlike I did .

by far the cheapest way is to buy a 'downlight cutting set' from B and screw.

It's about £5, it comes with 3 hole saws, and an arbor. (everything you need)

the only down side is that the hole it cuts is *slightly* (72mm, not 70mm) too big for lou's vents. so all I did was to wrap a length of stick on felt ( £1 from B and screw for a sheet, as well as tons of other felt protective pads) around the vent. it makes the seal very tight!

yes this aswell!! most holesaws arbor's have 13mm fittings, and most drills only have 10mm chucks.

the B&Q kit i mentioned has a 10mm arbor.

Sweet - cheers guys! I have an electric drill (i have the ability to steal the jigsaw off the father) but i think a trip to B&Q will be much easier and less emotionally expensive...
