Default natural crestie set up

Can anyone tell me what substrate is best for a natural crestie viv and name a few plants and flowers that would be suitable. I've done a search and the list is endless, so i'm just after a few that won't grow too big and look good.
I'm thinking of a red bromeliad as the main plant.
Thanks
