depends on the hot glue gun. generally cheaper ones dont get as hot so these can be fine. but more expensive ones can get too hot and will melt the Styrofoam.
if in doubt you can put abit on a lollypop stick wait 5 seconds and then use it 2 smear in between it will have enough time to cool down to not melt the foam. no nails would be a better choice imo though

yeah no problem with it, put it on the back board and then glue the polystyrene to it. The heat is to melt the glue from the glue stick to turn it 'gluey'. It's not hot for long enough to melt the polystyrene
