Default Can anyone tell me what this rock is?

I want something like this to decorate my leo viv.

Does anyone know what it is and where to get it for a reasonable price?

They look like iron-rich slate to me, but they could also be feldspar-rich rhyolitic rocks or similar.

Iron -rich rocks arent a great idea for the vivairum as heavy metals can affect the animals - particularly if the rocks are to go into a water system - but that wont be the case with a leo viv i presume?

Natural slate you can pick up from anywhere, particularly good bits in north wales. But go for plain slate - not ones that have obvious rusty coloured weathered patches.

Your best bet is to go for a rummage somewhere local and collect igneous or metamorphic rocks that you like the look of and clean them up. Sedimentary rocks are more likely to fall apart, and as they are more porous there may be nasties in there that you dont know about.

If all of this sounds like too much work, make your own or go to a fish shop and buy the rocks from there

OMG thats a steap price. Just go to B&Q and buy a bag, or a walk up the road. I get my slate for vivs from a garden 2 doors up hehe.

If those options can't be done just go to an aquarium shop, thats where i got my first ones that size. They were also alot cheaper.

Jesus Bloody Christ! Thats expensive for a rock, then the postage cost, what is it...gold crusted? I'd recommend some DIY places and/or garden/woods rummaging.

cheers chondro, good advice.

I have some similar looking ones that i found in an aquarium shop, just not quite enough. I live in east kent so everything found outdoors is basically chalk. Not quite the effect im after. Im doing one of those sandy clay baked ground things with rock set into it.
Ive also checked the B&Q's and homebases round here, they just seen to stock the same cotswold rockery stuff.

I'll put some pics up when i've finished it.
