Default Infra Red Heat Bulbs

Hey Guys,

I usually use plain old simple reflector spotlight bulbs for my beardies but as an emergency buy I brought a Exo terra infra red bulb and put it in one of my vivs for the time being, I must say I do like the look of it but the price of it was way to much for my likeing (£8.74 -.-)

So I was wondering, can anyone point me into a cheaper route? Can I use any Infra red bulbs?

Thanks

Hi mate,

Do you mean Infra red as in no light (heat only)?

Or do you mean a red spotlight?

Either way, you don't want either, you want a normal spotlight

beardies like to sunbath so they benefit from the bright light. Some people use ceramics and infra red without a problem but spot bulbs are the best way to go.

You want to think of the animals mental well being as well as it's physical well being. So with this in mind, Beardies come from a very bright environment, the sun gives around 150,000 lux of light at midday, where as a red spotlight will give about 200 lux.

This would be like sticking your Beardie in a coal mine.

In short, you should always try to mimic the animals natural environment, so lots of light for Beardies, a red light would be good for....well...Bats for instance

Hope this helps

Jay

P.S. All lights give off infra red light, infra red is a wave lenght of light we can't see, (like x ray, gama ray, ultra violet...etc) infra red is heat, it has nothing to do with the colour of the light. A "green" spotlight of say 100watts will give the same amount of infra red (heat) as a "red" 100watt spotlight, or a "white" 100watt spotlight.
