Default exotic-pets.co.uk

Scince I don't have a good pet shop near me, i've been thinking of ordering from exotic pets.

I'm buying a baby Royal soon and I have my eye on the vivarium starter kit:
* Flat Pack 24"x15"x15" Vivarium
* Light fittings + low wattage bulb
* Heat Mat 10x12"
* Habistat Temp Stat 300w
* Two Exo Terra Thermometer Liquid Strip
* Exo Terra Medium Reptile Cave
* Cork Bark
* Aspen Bedding - 11 Litre Bag
* Pot Water Bowl - 5" High
* AVS - Ball Python Manual

Is this equipment good enough for a young Royal or not?
I could really use some good advice from you guys.

Thanks.

£150.37 including delivery charge. I've checked aroud the web and they seem to have the best deal.
You also get 'pet points' for ordering from them, which can be used instead of money to buy things.

Personally, I'd forget get the heatmat, get a 40w exo-terra ceramic and a bulb guard and one of these as a fitting:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?...12m6&source=15

You'd also need a length of heat resistant mains cable. It would push the total price up by about £20 but would be a better method of heating for a royal as they can be prone to burns from mats.

If you still want to use a mat, you could put a false floor over the top of it - basically a sheet of laminated hardboard cut to the size of the floor, and sealed with silicone around the edge. The probe would be placed on top of the floor. This'd cost under £10.

At the very least, seal the terminal block of the mat with some insulating tape to prevent any liquid part of the faeces getting to the electrics.
Also, stick the probe to the mat with a bit of blu-tack - the stat will keep it under control better if the probe is fixed to the surface.
Aim to keep the mats temp around 86f average to be on the safe side. Mats can vary in temperature across their surface so try to find the hottest spot for the probe.

If you get a digital thermometer with an external sensor (about £8 from Maplin) you can also blu-tack the thermo's sensor to the mat, which will accurately read the surface temp.

Apologies for going on a bit, I know many people keep royals with mats with no problems at all, but I've seen some pretty hideous pics of what mats can do to royals - you can't be too careful.

Any Q's re - the above, feel free to PM me.

Regards,

Mark.
