a word of warning about commercially bought ant farms. the majority are poop! especially the gel ones
for the ant world you will probably need harvester ants, they look like L.niger slightly just alot bigger. i would suggest throwing it in the bin and building a DIY farm which are much better and will support a queen + brood alot better

- ANTSTORE World of Ants - • Portal
its a german site but you can make it english you want to look for DIY builds, involving stuff called y-tong (which is their and the yanks equivilent to aerated concrete) or plaster nests will probly cost you £10-20 at most (at that will give you a "the mutts nuts" one. but you can do a basic setup for £5) to set up and you can get most of the stuff from BNQ etc

To add to the above...
ANTSTORE... IS a VERY good site... BUT it charges a hell of a lot for postage/ shipping so perhaps not what you're looking for for just a kid's thing ![]() I agree totally with the gel colonies - they are good for the ants to eat but then things get stuck to them, the frass (poo) goes mouldy and they're very hard to maintain. The aforementioned live ants for ant world post is good if you are happy with just the workers but the colony will ONLY get smaller as there is no mated queen... all you'll see are ants wandering around, feeding and dying. Half the pleasure for me though is seeing the queen lay and the largvae/ pupae growing up... So in my opinion, the best bet is to get a simple one from eBay... type in 'ant colony' into there and you'll see several examples. They usually come as a mated queen with maybe 15 workers. I recommend for children getting Lasius niger as it's the common garden ant, doesn't bite and is easy to keep in England (as it's from here). They come in a large test-tube with a wad of cotton wool soaked in water. They'll be good in there for some time depending on the number of workers/ stage of the colony. Join up the tubing to your ant colony and they'll move in providing the tube is in the light and the formicarium is in the dark. Feed them anything you have... old fruit, meat... scraps you throw away after preparing dinner. Just change it every 2 days or so to prevent mould forming ![]() Hope this helps ![]() |
