I'm currently making a false rock background. I'm using polystyrene roofing tiles covered in grout. I plan to use water based acrylic paint and then seal with yacht varnish. If you do some googling on "Fake wall background" or "vivarium false rock" then you should find quite a lot of tips. I'm not even halfway through and I'm really pleased with the results.

You should check out this site: Lizard care, and fake rock wall landscapes, it's one of the users on Bearded Dragon . org. The guy has some fantastic instructional videos on there. They're actually for making scenery in your viv', but all the principals can be applied to a background.

ive just recently made another rock background with poly board, i get my phone back from repair in the next few days so can post a pic to show you how it looks. also with the poly board you can add in ledges to make it loos real.
