Default Bearded Dragon Morphs

Hey,

How common is it to have a beardie with a yellow head with orange stripes running from its eyes to its neck.

The body is also a funny mix, with the usual colourations and orange stripes running through, he also has alot of yellow in the body, I will try and get some pictures of him tonight.

We bought him as a baby and were told he will be a brightly coloured crestie, but for breeding purposes I would like to find out how rare his colourations are. Like I said pictures coming later

it could be a yellow headed agama, if your not sure he's a beardie. I don't know much about beardies but there is a lot of close relitives to the bearded dragons and they look almost exactly the same!!!

ok to answer your question as best i can. ( and if u could post a piccie it would be far easier)

1. Beardies that SHOW colours are not always morphs nor do they necessarily
pass on any of their colours to their offspring so unless you know what the parents looked like... and its a morph you wont know if the colours will be morph or just luck..

2. A yellow phase bearded dragon ( one that is not a proven morph) MAY pass on anything from NO yellows to lots of yellow to its offspring.

3. A morph is a proven genetic colour that WILL pass from parent to offspring but this can only be proven with breeding.

4. the colours of yellows and oranges arent rare at all as such... but having a 100% proven morph in a yellow colour is rarer than having a normal beardie with yellows.... there is also beardies in the wild with oranges and reds in abundance so normal beardies with dark nails can have these colours and whilst might be prettier to some buyers they arent necessarily morphs unless it can be proven with breeding.

5. The nail colour usually helps a bit when making decisions about breeding.. citrus morphs as well as hypos have clear or pale yellow nails and pale eyes... NORMAL beardie with yellow colours added in will usually have black nails...

so a few things to consider.

Was this bought as a morph??

Does it have black or pale nails??

Can you breed it then breed back a baby from the first clutch to see if you have a genuine morph or basically brighty coloured normal

PHEW... lol

did that make sense

here are pics of my TWO yellow/ citrus beardies

the first is my male.. he is VERY yellow... has pale gold nails and pale eyes HOWEVER i cannot or will not call him a morph as his genetics are NOT proven out until i brred him then breed a baby back to him. he is certainly gorgeous but not a morph .. so I call him lemon phase

the second is a 100% fire and ice citrus cross super citrus female MORPH.. the difference is she has been bred from definate morph parents and the colours are 100% PROVEN genetic..

if you compare you wil see two gorgeous yellow/ tangerine dragons BUT one is a morph that will definately pass the colours on ( the female fire and ice) the other is a male whos stunningly yellow but MAY OR MAY NOT pass the colours on..

I feel its really important when buying and selling beardies that the distinction in morphs and visual colours without being a proven morph is differentiated ... for buyers especially who wish to breed highly coloured dragons buying visual coloured dragons without proof its genetic could be an issue..

ok well if you havent fallen off your chair half asleep LOL

heres the pics..

FIRST.. my lemon phase male.. not a proven morph ( sorry its a baby piccie and his heads in shed so u dont get to see the orange eye markings)
he does have the markings of a morph with pale golden nails which you can clearly see in the piccie ( not black) and pale eyes but i can only check this with breeding him to the morph girl below then breeding a baby of theirs back to him... this was explained to me by ssthisto another forumite on this forum whos excellent with genetics etc

SECONDLY my female citrus from fire and ice... shes is 100% a morph from the parents merlin and mia

Hades dragons and Becky Wheeler are the best forumites to ask and answer colour questions in beardies as they have far more experience than me..

so if u can post a picie and let us also know what colour nails the beardie has etc it might help but in the end only breeding then breeding back will determine if the colour is visual only or genetic morph.. this will help long term in breeding plans for you

xxx
