Default wheat bran substrate?

i was talking to a beardy breeder and he said that he has been using wheat bran as subsstrate instead of sand. It apparently looks really good, doesnt cause any impactions as its fully digestable, smells nice and is pretty good at absorbing mess. has anybody else used it? and if so where can i get it from?

I've never used it, but would be a bit wary of it because bran tends to go mouldy if it gets damp - that could be from a beardie pooing on it, or spilling water from its dish etc. You'd have to be very careful when removing poos, to make sure that you took all of the damp bran out...

If you go to the newbie section on here there is a sticky about beardie nutrition. It has a link to a chart detailing nutrition of various foods. Bran is marked as red which means never feed it to your beardie. I wouldn't use it

i am not worried about that to be honest, i feed mine outside the viv, so impaction is not really going to happen. But i imagine sand would have a red on a nutrition chart too. Yet its commonly accepted that adult dragons can be kept on it providing they are fed well away from it. i geuss its down to personal practice.

I think i will see if i can buy some in bulk (my vivs are 8 ft long so need alot!) and see how it goes.

Doesn't wheat bran have sugars/preservatives/additives in? There's no doubt that the beardie would eat it and I don't think those ingrediants would do it any good to be honest...I don't know though, depends what kind of stuff you're wanting to use I suppose.

I wouldn't be worried about impaction, i'd just be worried about mine eating it. Considering how much he goes around licking, it would be a lot lol. As for buying in bulk I've heard you can get sacks from places that sell horse feed quite cheap

Wheat bran is the stuff that you get when you buy worms and crickets etc. It's just natural flakes.
