Default Rspca

hi out of curiosity ive read alot to do with the RSPCA on here lately and do they actually have anything to do with the animal welfare in shops??

im only asking so no crazy replies please.

what about the british herpotology society? or the folk that do the licences for the shops ? they should go around every year and check the wellfare of all the stock in the shops?

do these shops have the appropriate licences to keep animals? if so there would be a copy or something pinned up somewhere stating the stocking numbers and the types of livestocks aloud to keep??

No, the RSPCA don't have anything to do with shop licensing. Any shop can 'keep' animals, but to sell them they need a Pet Shop License issued by the local council. This needs re-inspecting and renewing every year and must be displayed in the shop.

The council issues licenses and carries out inspections at least once a year. In my area they are part of the environmental team but every council will have at least one officer responsible for pet shops.
Like anything else tho they are a bit of a paper tiger but the best help available I suspect. The RSCPA may or may not come out to reptiles as they tend to pretend reps don't exist.
As for societies etc they do not have the right to enter premises and inspect animals without permission from the owner and don't have the power to do anything anyway except give advice.
Reps are at the bottom of the list I'm afraid for animal welfare with the exception of inverts which don't even get on the list.
