Crested gecko - Egg laying

Just a few quick questions.

1) If using a substrate like Eco-earth or another composty type, will crested gecko's be tempted to lay eggs elsewhere to the nest box? Would it be worth thining out the amount of substrate used to about
1 1/2" so the gecko doesnt feel its deep enough to lay in.

2) Would it also be worth seperating the female from the male if she looks gravid? Or will she need to be back with him to lay the rest of her clutches?

Still not ready to breed them yet, wana learn a bit more first.

1. if you use a soil type substrate then the geckos will more than likely not lay in the lay box. she will find a spot she prefers and lay there. Thinning the soil to 1.5" will make no difference. I have a big female gargoyle (over 70g) that always lays her eggs at the front of the viv where the soil is only about 1.5" deep. It would need to be about 1cm deep to stop them laying in the substrate.

2. The female only needs to mate once in a year to produce clutches all season. so if you dont want them to breed seperate them asap.

They arent together yet. So thats ot my worry. I was just trying to work out how often my male will need to go with each of my girls. And with the substrate prehaps I should just go back to kitchen roll.

We use peat on the bottom of our vivs, and all the females cresteds are gargs use the laying boxes. Infact even one of our chahoua uses the box (no lid on though) So it depends on the individual gecko as to whether they choose to use a box or not.

ive tried laying boxes with my crestys but they never lay in the boxes,i now have soil on all the floors of my vivs and they lay where they want

i always seem to find mine,but i usually see the fems digging,so usually have a idea where to look.

They can be easy if you see the females digging as Maria said....however, if they give you no indications of digging, or if they do it in the middle of the night behind some bark....its very easy to miss them.. I missed a few eggs from earlier this year d'oh!

did they still hatch as it says they only need to be at room temp but may take a while longer than normal?
