Post Microchipping reptiles

i resently microchipped a tortoise at work (im a vet nurse).
around spring we had quite a few stray torties coming in. the microchip ensure he would be returned straight away if he went walkies again! microchipping ensures a pet is recognisable and provide quite a strong arguemnt for proof of ownership.

i saw on crimewatch a man who owned parrots was targetted 3 differnt times for his birds. it would have been much easier to identifly them if they had been chipped. im sure there have been instances when reptile owners have had their pets stolen. they are very valuble after all.

i was wondering how many people have concidered microchipping their reptiles?

i am quite an expert in microchipping so if anyone wants to ask qs they can as well.

you would probly have to got to a special reptile vet.
we did the tortie in his back leg, just near the stiffel.
i will need to look into it! but i would assume it would be the same as a dog or cat (under the skin on the back of the neck). this oviously not possible in the case of the tortoise or bird. site will vary from reptile to reptile depending on the aproprite site.

Microchipping Your Reptile

i just thought id put it out there!

microchopping is relitivly cheep and can avoid heartache and theft.
it is also a legal requiremnt for certain types of reptile and any traviling under the pet travel scheme.

Sounds good, but the chip that is in my cat is way to big to go in a crestie(!). For a monitor etc I could see why it would be good though and they are big enought to handle it. Any further info as to whether they are suitable for reps?

the chip is a standard size (a grain of rice). i would agree that is quite big for a little gecko! however, it is suitable for large reptiles like moniter lizards. i would recomend contacting a specialied reptile vet. i am looking into it!

as for snakes it is deffinatly a good idea! espicially if they escape alot!

Ive considered chipping my snakes. But peeps on snakes bit say not really worth it.

Im still considering it, but its finding someone who will do them. Not the cost.

its not for every one, it just gives peise of mind. if they escape a lot or you are well know in the area as a keeper its a good idea.
