Default Looking for Monitor Rescue Centre - Essex Area

Title says it all really, I know of someone in the Essex area who has rescued a Nile - doesn't want to keep it - but wants it to go to a good rehoming centre.

Thanks

Niles generally are not friendly.

Also hard to house when they hit 6/7feet long.

I don't know about this one but Niles generally are quite-very unfriendly.

No - it's not friendly. Like Mason said, Niles are not generally friendly (nor are any monitors really, "tolerant" is more the word). It would have to go to someone who is used to handling larger more aggressive monitors. I have a sav but don't feel competent to take on a Nile (yet ) though I believe Ornate's are more "tolerant".

The person's words are "around 2.5 feet long… It’s claws are well worn and used – which to me is another indicator that it’s been “out” for a while .. It escaped it’s tank after being with us only an hour! Clever and strong – I was very impressed ;o)

It’s quiet enough when cool but as soon as the temps warm up he starts to become aggressive – hissing, tail whips, open mouth .. the usual aggressive postures."

Sounds like a healthy monitor by the description, and a juvenile.

I thought there were a few reptile rescuers here on this forum but can't remember who they were or I'd have contacted them direct.

I hope the nile gets to go to the right place. This is certainly one reason why I dont think some monitors should be available in the pet trade. So many of the larger monitors are poorly researched and people dont recieve the right information on them from the seller and they get too large, become unhandleable and then they get dumped somewhere.
Its bad enough that people do it so often with moderate sized monitors like ackies and boscs, but at least there are reptile keepers with enough experience to take on lizards their size and they can be rehomed. Its not quite so easy to find good suitable homes for niles and water monitors, especially when they're subadult and hardly been handled.

Just hope he finds the right home.
