Default URGENT: My Pet Shop Inspection!!!

Went for a walk around my local pet shop today - which is mainly a reptile-herp/tropical fish shop...tell me what you think of this:

Tank 1 - roughly 3ft long, 1ft width. Clear glass back and front - blacked out sides

1 Collared
2-4 Water Dragons - youngsters
4 leopard geckos - adults (1 male proven breeder, 3 females - all 3 years of age)

One medium habba hut and large water dish between all
ALL TOGETHER IN ONE TANK

Tank 2 - very tall tank, must have been 2-3 ft tall, 3 ft wide (dont quote me) Clear glass front and one side.

(Giant?) Hermanns Tortoise
Spurthighed Tortoise (about 3 tortoises in total in the tank)
2 bearded dragons
adult water dragons (couldnt count)

Shared water dish, no hides, few plants
ALL TOGETHER IN ONE TANK

This is only HALF of what I saw...

Comments...?

sounds like they are wasting space. They could probably fit some snakes in those tanks too....

did you say anything to them? iv seen this a few times before and its hard to tell if there doing it out complete ignorance or if they just dont give a sh*t about the reptiles! although id be inclined to think they dont care, were the 'vivs' clean? some people shouldnt be allowed pets never mind a pet shop

i didnt wanna say anything...i was acting as a leo breeder...holding the leos was my way of looking what state everything was in. The water was dirty...they were mainly on repti carpet but i did see a few cages with calci sand which could be called stupid! to be honest, the animals didnt look very happy.

he told me a breeder sold them all his old stock (beardies, leos) and basically it looks as though the shop has had no room for them and so hes shoved them anywhere

The amount of animals in the vivs is stupid as they dont even have the same environments in the wild but I must say, keeping on calcisand is not necessarily 'stupid' Some really experienced reptiles keepers on here use calcisand and it can be used with no problems if you use it wisely and not with the wrong species. Its not my preference but some calcisand, t-rex in particular, has started making it much finer grain than before so its much more like playsand.

I used to work in a pet shop that used it, it took a bit of persuading to get some of the animals off it, leo's for example and beardies, because they can miss the food and get a mouthful of sand. Some species like the chameleons where ok to keep on it because it was very rare they'd come into contact with it.

I wouldnt call it stupidity anyway because there are people on here who use it who you just might offend
