Moss will grow in any situation that has deep or dappled shade, a least fairly moist (constantly) preferably slightly wet, and most important of all, the soil on which it grows must have poor air flow/circulation ie it must be compacted/patted down/firmed.
Moss actually reproduces 2 ways - by spores and assexually (any part the moss keeps splitting, making more moss without the name for a male/female - that`s a reason mosses don`t have flowers). So your best bet, would be to actually bed down, or pin down, some moss that you either find or buy - as long as it`s green, it`s alive. Preferably get some out of your garden (pesticide etc free area) as this`ll be the freshest and the most likely to `take`.
Basically follow the above, keep it ever so slightly in a place where there`s slight sunlight and keep moist - it`ll do the rest within a few week.
