We got a two year old male bearded dragon a week and a half ago and I found some tiny black mites in the corner of his eyes today. I feel terrible as I have not checked him properly 'cause I didn't want to stress him out. I've bathed him and about 8 came off in the water. He really didn't want to get out, and when I did he snuggled into me and wouldn't go back in the viv. Everything we have put in has been baked and treated with a chlorine solution, so I called the pet shop he was from and they just denied having any problems with mites and couldn't advise me on what to do. Alarm bells had already started ringing as they had sent bark chips as substrate.
We've taken everything out and disinfected the tank, but I can still see some mites. How do I get rid and what are the chances he's spread them to our snakes? |

There are off the shelf products you can buy, perhaps someone can advise on which is better. However, if it was me I would seek advice from a vet.
Persist with the cleaning though The mites will only spread to the snakes if you have mixed any substrate or mixed anything for that matter with the snakes. Likely hood from hand contact is little, but not impossible

Thanks for that, makes me feel a little better. The snakes are kept away from the dragon, we wash hands before handling and they have a different substrate, so hopefully it will be OK. Will go and get something from a pet shop tomorrow and then book in to see the Vet on Monday. Will sterilise all the other tanks anyway to try and nip anything in the bud.

The pet shop remedies are a waste of time.
Take him to the vets. Mites can travel a long long way so you will need to treat the room he's kept in as well! The treatment i used was a dectomax injection and then two applications of front line spot on (fortnight interval). And then had to use a special spray around the room in which they were kept. Its not cheap just to warn you ![]()
