pfft a horse, get a castle!

btw love your leo site. I even linked to yours as an example of a great one as you might have noticed. I'm getting my first lizards next spring, a group of steno geckos. Setting up the enclosure in January even though I might not get the reps till March! You guys can critique the little noobies first ever vivarium set-up!(sheds tear of pride.....)

well you guys could share one! We could have the land of the lizard sub-forum with a large gate, you know outpost with a really tall wodden gate with spikes on, a big moat, scary drawbridge. In the two large turrets of the castle(i think their called turrets?) you and sleepyD can be their with giant crossbows which are fixed into the walls. You can ask judge them and see fit whether to let them enter or feed them to pack of 6ft monitors hiding on the bank of the moat under the bridge.

Default Repsonse

Hi again, i know i havn't posted for a long time, and i now relise what a state the gecko was in. The truth is, this is my first reptile, o ye and im not 10, not sure where anyone got that from, im 18 tomorrow. Back to what i was saying, this is my first reptile, so when he stoped eating as much as he did when i got him, i thought it was because i moved a few things in his viv around, and he wasnt probably settled. So i left him for a week, and changed his mealworms, and added a few crickets in, he never touched that crickets, and the mealworms i think, just hide, and when i eventually noticed that he wasn't very active, and there is something wrong with him, was the night i posted, so no, i didn't look at the bottom of him, and think, that looks fine because it obviously doesnt... that was the first time i had looked. (and i only held him upside down for a few seconds, and didnt know that i couldn't, but thanks for the advice. About the vet, i do have a part time job, that gets me around £400 a month, and im still at college. So saying that "i can't afford the vet" was wrong of me, and i admit that, infact i was planning on taking him to the vet that the reptile shop advised, the very next day. Now for the sad part, unfortunatly he passed away that night. I was extremely annoyed at myself, because i hadn't known that he was ill.

I rang the place i purchased him from and spoke to them, and they agreed to bring him in, and take a look at him. The guy that works there is fairly experienced, and has a lot of reptiles as pets if you are thinking its one of those pet shop boys that knows fu*k all. He said that it looked like an internal problem, and it was underweight. He spoke to me about how begginners never relise the symptoms early enough to do much about it. he said he would take look at it properly later, and said that he could give me another gecko for the price they buy it in for. I asked him if he could k
eep the offer open for a few weeks, so i could think about it, and if i decided to, get chance to look up illnesses related to geckos, and early symptoms.

For those of you thinking that im probably some kid that 1 day thought of getting a lizzard cause there cool, are wrong. I have 2 dogs, 7 ducks, chickens, koi carp, and trops, i know non of these are reptiles, but if i didn't love and have a passion for animals, i wouldn't help keep any of these lovely critters.

So to finish i just want to appologise for those of you i have offended, and thank those of you that tried to help, its sad that it was to late, and i will and have learned from my mistake tho sadly taking a leo's life in the process

I hope to get another leo, and have bought several books a few days ago, Thanks for all the replies.

Hi Daniel, so sorry to hear about your Leo. It did look in a very bad way but as you have said - you had nothing really to compare with. If you decide to take up the offer of another gecko try to make sure it looks chunky, alert, try to see it feeding, has all its fingers and toes and looks generally well. Do some research first and read loads of care sheets - the ones on here are good. Then if you are concerned about anything ask here or on the Newbies section. Best wishes.

hi daniel, glad you got back to us - i've been watching this thread waiting for your reply! sorry to hear about your little one, but as jools said you had no basis for comparison. don't let this experience put you off though, as these critters are amazing and problems with them are rare i think - i've been keeping them for years and not had a single problem............fingers crossed!

thanks again for letting us know.

Daniel,

I'm glad you realise that all the comments here weren't specifically aimed at you, rather peoples frustrations.

People get frustrated with all the questions being repeated and the same mistakes, but this is your first mistake so didn't deserve to be RAGED at like you'd been the person that frustrated all these long-time keepers.

I'm relatively new to reptiles myself (beardie for a year, tortie for two and now 2 baby leos) and know how daunting it can be. Personally i'd spend the time doing as much reading as possible, getting the viv PERFECT (and probably sterilised aswell, wouldn't want to infect any new ones) and just generally preparing for the new one.

Use it as a learning experience. it's terrible that the leo had to die but so long as you've learned a valuable lesson from it (though i'm sure you wish you hadn't had to) then use that experience to be the very best owner to your new leo.

Good luck,

Kiel.
