Crested Gecko Habitat

Hi to everyone,
On friday I will be picking up my first ever gecko & can't wait
I'm setting up his home as we speak & need a bit of advice from you exerienced owners...

1) I have been told not to bother with a heat mat as they get their heat from the air around them? They will be housed in my bedroom so warm but not tropical.

2) Can i source some of my pets play things from the local woods? As long as any logs / braches i get are dried out & clean of bugs i dont see it as an issue... Am i wrong?

3) I plan to set half the floor area with peat (with safe plants growing) and half with bark bought from an official lizard supplier... Am I over complicating things?

Thanks in advance for any advice given & I'll upload some photo's when i get him (I'll need help identifying his colours)
