Default The Cheek Of It!!!!

Last night I found the perfect male leopard gecko on a breeders website who is taking orders for Hamm in March,

I sent him an email asking if it was still for sale and how much he requires as a deposit to hold it,

He sent me an email today saying that he can only let a male go if I purchase another 2 females (and offered me the most expensive female at $340) I emailed back saying I only require the male as already have females for him and then he emails back saying that he has too many female so he cant sell just one male, he will do it if I buy another female

The bloody cheek of it! how can he be allowed to do that? surely if the gecko was at Hamm and I said "I want that one" he cant then tell me to get more, If he has given a price on the website the surely that is what it is, no catches!!!!

Now Im infuriated because i feel obliged to be pressured into getting another one as he knows he is in a position where he can do this (as the morph is rare, not many in UK etc)

Rant Over

He can do whatever he likes - they're his animals and he can refuse to sell them under any circumstances he wants. Whether he wants to sell males WITH females instead of selling a male on his own, or whether he wants only to sell on the second Tuesday in September, he's entitled to make those conditions.

A website - particularly a site in Germany - isn't subject to the same trading laws as, say, a brick and mortar shop (especially if they don't take payment on the site)... and even Sainsburys can refuse to sell you something at the stickered price.

Plenty of people will sell "as a pair only".

Some people are just rude or weird lol.
Dont feel pressured.
If he really wants rid of some females tell him ud only be interested in a female for $(insert amount), otherwise u wont be buying anything at all.
Im sure u could find someone on here or nearby looking for a female, but make sure u clear any prices with them before you buy anything.

Dont feel that he has the power cos at the end of the day, if u say no and he is rude to everyone, he'll be the one without a sale

I understand he can decide what ever he likes but I just think its a cheap tactic to get me to spend some more money, at the end of the day you dont say you have geckos for sale at a price and then when it comes down to it say that they have to buy 2 other also!

And yeah i do kind of feel pressured to do so because they wont come around that often (especially in UK) and I'ts a good deal (if it was on its own lol)

I'm gonna see what he says back and then decide but now a $140 gecko is going to be 2 for $240

basically and unfortunately for you he feels he can do it as
a) they're his geckos and he can sell them to who he wants too and how he wants too
and b) he's got something that you want
personally speaking I don't agree with 'shifting the goal post' just to try and increase sales/shift excess reps ~ I probably would have told him to shove the order but thats me not you so it depends really on how desperate you are or if you have the patience to wait until one becomes available without strings from someone else

I dont know yet, I might just chance it and see what he says at Hamm (if he still had it available), Its a tricky decision really, do I let it go and possibly go a year without it or do I stick with it.....decisions decisions! lol

Is he exhibiting at Hamm or is he simply willing to take to Hamm?

Personally I would first search in the UK and see the likelihood of one becoming available here first. As has been said, he can pretty much ask whatever he wants, but I suspect that in many situations speaking German will overcome these types of situations.

That said I know of many species where breeders will only sell one sex with a member (or members) of the other sex due to rarity.

He is exhibiting at Hamm and fair enough it is a relatively rare morph but considering I already have a female in line for him I didnt want to have another female (yet)

Its not that much of a biggy because I'm hoping there will be more at Hamm but it is unlikely, and they are quite rare in the UK
