Default Stud

Just something i was thinking about and wondered whether it happens with lizards and snakes.

Like 2 high end morphs cost quite a bit in some species so was just a thought that crossed my mind.

it's a good idea. maybe you could make your fortune by arranging stud links. disease control would be a royal (pardon the pun) pain in the backside though.

I was just thinking that i could never afford to breed 2 high end morphs myself, having 1 would cost too much never mind 2.

I was thinking of getting a male for my Bell Albino this year and i was thinking to myself surely this sort of thing goes on!

Studding is a good idea on paper but in reality its a different story, its not just a case of lending ur male to someone who has a female to do the business and then have it back again.

Both lizards would need vet checks on them make sure they are both fit for breeding and make sure they haven't got parasites or nasty diseases etc etc, even with the vet check i'd would still advise on quarentining them for a number of weeks aswell just to doubly make sure, also moving lizards from one home to another even if its just temporary can be really stressful for them.

Then its a case of who has the female u would like to breed with, an they be trusted to look after your lizard they way u do (as more than likely if u were to offer ur lizard out as a stud he would have to go to the female)
Will they let you have some babies or will they just pay u a set amount.
Also if its a shop ur studding to then how do u know they wont try n sell ur lizard (not saying this is common pratice for rep / pet shops, u never know tho)

The list is endless and to be honest with u with the time and effort aswell as costs it ends up working out better just to get a male n female of ur own in the high end morphs

Most lizards have a breeding season. If a lizard was going out to stud then any responsible keeper would need them to be quarentined with at least 2 negative faecal checks done before the "incomer" was let anywhere near their stock. By that time the season could be over. And who would want to "lend" their male (cause thats the way it would work) for 3 months when their services would be required at home? Sorry but practically it just wouldn't work - nice idea tho.

This idea has come up a few times on the forum, it would be useful, but after it is thought through, all the effort it would require, it is just not worth it, it would cost more money then you'd get back from it. I wish it were as simple as putting dogs up for stud.

Haha ur not the only one that wishes that. I have a very "horny" male beardie at the min but i do not have any females of the right age / size for him to breed with that haven't already been bred with another male recently. if studdin lizards was as easy as dogs then i would of done that with him by now lol

I'm pretty sure a few people have or are planning to do it on the forum.

Not something I'd personally do, but then I couldn't let my dog (If I had one!) be studded either.
