The bag you got with it may be calci sand or similar if it was one of those starter kits.. I wouldn't use that either.

You can get some very nice peices of lino which are totaly safe and inexpensive, or tiles etc.. also has the advantage of being extremely easy to clean

Anything that can't be digested (sand, woodchip etc) can sit in the gut and build up, eventually causing impaction which can be fatal.

to the op......best thing is to do what you think is safest.
I would agree to disagree about sand but wood chips-NEVER. They are absolutely evil IMO and I really can't understand why anyone would want to use them. They pose a huge impaction risk - if any are ingested, by a Leo of any age, they can kill. They will smell after a couple of weeks and need to be replaced. They will harbour bacteria, moulds, any parasite ova and it is impossible to give the viv a proper clean without disposing and replacing them (expensive too). They are not even a natural surface for your Leo to be on.
There are 100% safe substrates - slate, tiles, lino, reptile carpet which are not only safe but easy to maintain hygiene and a more natural surface for your Leo to be on.
Sorry for the rant but woodchips..........yuck
