Default Silent Crickets...

Am I being naive or shouldn't that mean they don't 'sing'? I got 25 of the x large ones and they are defo not silent!!

Also what have I done wrong...I gave them a little water + some tomatoe, lettuce but lots of them have died? I have them in a cricket keeper with ventilation....

Help appreciated.

I didnt know this myself until last night but your not supposed to give crickets water. They get all the water they need from their food.

Ive not heard my crickets chirping whilst kept in thier tubs. I only buy the small/medium ones though. Mind you we have got a cricket behind the fridge that sings all day and night long so maybe once they get to a certain size even silent crickets become noisey

there are two types of brown cricket, the large, plain brown ones are the noisy ones, the smaller ones which are a lighter brown with a black stripe down their backs are the silent ones... sometimes you end up with a mixture. and they may have died due to their atmosphere, they dont like particularly humid air, or being too cold
hope this helps

yeah i killed a load off once with too much cucumber, if its too damp they die. dont bother with water or tomato. just give them carrots and spinach an peas etc and dust their food with neutrobal too.

I give our crix water, yes they get the moisture from the veg but it dries out and no veg has as much er..water as water.
I was using a sponge scarer sittin in a little jar lid so the crix dont drown but now im just using a coffee mate lid which is only like 2mm deep and the crix can easily be seen walking in it and drinking b4 walking out problem free.

i wouldnt mess about with that gel stuff. if ya wanna water your insects whatever they are a bit of cotton wool in a coffee jar lid works easily and is cheap.

I do the same as Bev, cotton wool balls, soak them then squeeze slightly so not soaking wet, some bug grub, carrot, lettuce etc etc, I dont lose that many now apart from when they get eaten.

However it should be noted that silent crickets..even the "silent ones which are brown with black stripe" are infact not silent.

also to the topic starter ----u gave ur crix tomato lettuce and water, but they need to eat wheatibix or poridge oats etc.
