The answer is simple stop breeding the animals, then you can command a higher price if you want to otherwise dont complain about the drop in prices.Of course it needs everyone to stop breeding them in that case.
Its a natural progression for any product to become cheaper with the more numbers available.Just go to the classifieds and you will see 90% of the adverts in the lizard section are for Crested Geckos,Leopard Geckos and Bearded Dragons.Look on it another way I cannot believe the high prices of some of the morphs of thse species into the hudreds of pounds for what are essentially mainstream animals.Surely it is better for someone new to the hobby to buy one of these species than to go out and buy some wildcaught anoles or the like. They have a much better chance of keeping the Crested Gecko alive and then be more interested in the hobby longterm.

It's just supply and demand. If you had something really unusual the you'd get the money. Just look at the difference in price between a leatherback, silkback or normal bearded dragon. I bought my silkie last month for £250 when as you've said in previous posts you can get normals for £5

8,000-10,000 reptile and amphibian species on earth... and just a handful of species make up the bulk of what are commonly kept in captivity by most people...

But who gets to decide what the "right" price is? I mean, if Joe Bloggs breeds high-end animals, carefully chosen to compliment each other's traits and produce high-end attractive offspring, and John Q Public breeds a couple of animals he picked up from a pet shop, wasn't particularly looking for any complimentary traits, just "oh, I've got a male and a female, I should breed them" ... should they have the same price? Seeing as it costs the same to *hatch* and *raise* them?

Oh, and that is sort of illegal, it's known as "price fixing".

I did not know that was illegal! Learn something everyday.

I have to say though, I never thought it would work for everyone to just say, sod it, let's up the price again, I just was confused as to why there was such a difference. Now I know why, and my rant was a little over... the top..

Im amazed at the prices in the USA and also many europeans. At hamm there was a creamsicle female they wanted 700 euros, 900 euros for a male creamsicle pinstripe. I knew it wasnt going to be too cheap over there but with the exchange rate improving compared to when we went to houten I was expecting on par prices with possibly more variety.

Ive got some plain and dal hatchlings up at £40 and all im getting is messages asking for females, for £40? They gotta be jokeing!! Annoys the hell outta me that they cant read UNSEXED and the cheek that they think they will get them so cheap.

I found a classified add after 2 adult female cresites, willing to pay £60 or £100 the pair, id say they had no chance but the markets dropping so low it wouldnt suprise me if they did get them. There are so many wanted add for "females to breed with my male this year" who state morph, colour etc isnt importaint they just want to breed that I fear next year the markets going to be even more over run with crestie hatchlings that the prices will drop even lower. I know some shops that will have my hatchlings but they cant care for their animals correctly imo and I wouldnt want our names bought into conversation if the geckos got into a sorry state due to lack of care.

Edit: Anyone notice 2009 90%+ of classified ads were for leopard geckos, 2010 there was a massive drop in numbers, id asume people stopped breeding them due to the difficulty of selling on the young. It makes you wonder how far the crestie market will go before it drops to this and people stop breeding cause they think they can make money out of it.

I wish I could get some of your European prices for some Storr's monitors--they are about $1,500 each here (the U.S.). Ughhh.
