Think you don't need a thermostat?
My results one evening of testing a seven-watt Habistat heat mat without thermostatic control.

For our experiment, we used one 7-watt Habistat heat mat. This was placed on top of a piece of foil, then had four layers of Metro newspaper taped...
Just after plugging the mat in - the temperature already reads 85 degrees on the newspaper.
Ten minutes and there are spots reading 96 degrees fahrenheit.
Twenty minutes and spots are measuring 103 degrees fahrenheit.
Forty minutes of the heat mat being on, surface temperature 106.6 degrees.
Temperature on the covered mat: 109 degrees
Measurement at 10 minutes, chippings surface: 78 degrees. That's a pretty big change for just ten minutes.

Thirty minutes on the heat mat with chippings - 107.7 degrees on the floor of the faunarium. This is hot enough to brain-damage a snake.
Thirty minutes on the heat mat with chippings - surface temperature 93 degrees. Too hot for a corn, not bad for a royal... but...
Ten minutes on the heat mat with chippings, faunarium floor temperature 94 degrees. Keep in mind many snakes burrow for security.
