Smile New to crested geckos, advice welcome :)

Hi everyone, after a lot of thought i've finally decided to get my very first reptile, a crested gecko.

Basically i know very little about them so any advice will be very welcome.

I'm told they're perfect for beginners, hope so

Anyway, thanks in advance

Lynne

They're gorgeous, I love mine to pieces. Have you got books on them? Read up a bit before you buy one

Am currently doing some reading and online research before actually buying my first crested gecko.

Really am a complete novice at this, so any advice at all will be most welcome

Thanks

I got my very 1st rep, a crestie 4 months ago.
Spent many hours reading forums and websites, and bought a book on them.

I'd recommend buying all the equipment needed and setup and run for a few weeks before the crestie arrives to check the temps and humidity. Use a digital thermometer.

I read that it's best to put young/new cresties into a small faunarium with a kitchen roll substrate for a while so you can easily see if it's settling in ok and monitor it's eating and pooing habits.

I put mine straight into a exo terra terranium (18x18x24) with eco earth substrate and loads of silk plants, vines and branches!

If I were to start again I would of used the small faunarium method as it was tricky to keep an eye on him for the first few weeks as he was very timid and as you're a newbie you can be somewhat paranoid about things going wrong etc.

Mine soon felt at home though and seems to love his big, planted viv and has grown a lot.
If you need anymore tips just ask, and I certainly recommend getting one. Never thought a reptile could be so cute!

I have 3 females in a huge 3 foot long tank and a male in his own 2 foot tank. I have done this because my male is double the size and possibly at sexual maturity and the girls are not.
In my vivs I have
Rock background on 3 sides
moss
soil (proper lizard soil)
a heat mat on a thermostat
REAL plants but be careful as some are poisonous
a fogger (keep humidity levels up)
fake silk leaves into the background so they can hide
Bamboo for them to climb
statues for them to jump to n from
real wood
real vine (you can get fake stuff)
didgi temp gage

I feed mine cresty gecko mix on its own, this is essential I was told by a shop that so happened to sell reptiles that were ' in fashion' that I dont need this... this isnt true they need the mix.
I sometimes feed mine smoothies that I make with added cresty mix. I sometimes buy them baby organic food (fruit)
you can feed them crickets, but mine dont eat them i find the crickets a week later when i clean them out.lol.
I play with all my lizards as much as possible my male comes to the glass when i put the food in to come out, they are very loving.. mine to seem to love my laptop and computers and jump towards them at every opportunity.

They are great

I have one and 2 more reserved hehe!

I find asking questions on here and searching the internet helped me loads! And would always recommend someone to research well before buying & also to have a set up all ready for when he arrives

You can make the set up as simple, complex, natural as you wish, have fun with it!

Hope you enjoy your crestie & don't forget to post up piccies

Vicky

i'm also looking at getting a crestie, however i have the added task of bringing both my parents round to the idea! however this wasn't too hard last summer when i got my yemen chameleon.

even considering getting rid of my laptop and printer (which are both on their last legs anyway) inorder to make room in my bedroom, until i can afford my own place that is, then i shall fill it with rep's!

a crestie or two is def the next rep for me so i shall keep my eye on this thread for info!
