Default New frog owner!

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the site and the proud new and 1st time owner of an Albino horned frog called Boris!

I have him in a new vivarium with an under tank heat pad with a little gravel for drainage and some moss! Was wondering if anyone had any advice on feeding him as he doesn't seem at all interested in the crickets I've been offering and hasn't eaten anything for 3 days! I know they can go a couple of days but am starting to worry!

Any suggestions you have would be appreciated!

How deep is the moss/soil? He may still just be settling in. Im afraid Im no Frog expert. But if you have just brought him home, He will probably still be stressed. If he is in a busy area of the house and being handled frequently he may be stressed, this making him not eat.

Im sure in no time he'll come around. Very unlike a Horned Frog, AKA Eating Machine.

Sorry I have no knowledge of frogs but just wanted to say "Hello and Welcome" to the forum.

Only just seen this and have a few areas of concern.

The heat pad needs to be on the side, horned frogs spend most of the time buried up to and over their eyeballs. A mat underneath will be very uncomfortable heat wise and you may risk slowly cooking the frog.

Gravel and moss are horned frog killers. They can both easily be ingested and cause impaction which may lead to death.

Your frog needs a few inches of damp coconut fibre to bury itself in, no moss and no gravel. Give it a water bowl big enough for it to sit in but not deep enough for it to drown in... yes horned frogs can drown. The water needs to be dechlorinated as does any water you spray into the tank. I'd also suggest using dechlorinated water when you expand the coconut fibre (it comes in compressed bricks) The heat mat needs to be on the side and you should have a stat to ensure a good temperature of around 27C.

As for not eating, it could be it's not happy in its environment which doing the changes above should sort that, could simply be off its food or just not like crickets. How big is the frog? Sometimes they'll ignore prey that's too small. You could try earth worms or locusts depending on size of frog.

Make the changes I've said and if you've got any further problems then post in the Amphibian section as your post will be answered a lot quicker and there's a fair few Horned Frog keepers on here.

Default Thanks

Hi everyone

Thanks very much for all of your advice! Have made the changes suggested and Boris seems a lot happier now! Think he just needed time to settle in! There's so much conflicting advice on care sheets on the internet and from pet stores, can be confusing! Hopefully now we'll be fine!

Thanks again

Your best bet is to always find a few people who keep said animal and get their advice first hand. I take caresheets as a very rough guideline unless they're on a forum.

Wish you all the best with your frog and you'll have to post some pics
