I too have just got my first snake.
Through my research I've found that it's best to have your matstat probe just about your substrate. This way it's the heat the snake will be receiving instead of just the heat coming out the mat. Again with the thermometers it's it's best to have them at either end just above the substrate, this way you can see if you have an adequate heat gradient
