Default Are these overheated fire bellied newts????

Well I have had the tank all set up for my fire bellied newts for a few days now and started looking round to see if ther are any for sale in my area. Well I popped into a one garden centre nearby to find that their aquatic department did have the Japanese variety but had just sold last ones but with more coming in possibly next Friday. I noticed that the tank in which the previous one were housed prior to sale was in the tropical section and was heated at 23C. I question one of the assistants who informed me that 'they always come in with the tropicals' and are put in the appropriately heated tanks.
Well i have my tank opperating at 18c at the moment and having read many care sheets thought i'd got a good temperature in which i intended introduce my newts.
My question really is if i buy at 23c will i get away with leaving my newts in the bag in which they are supplied inside the tank water for an hour or so to sablelise or is the temperature change still going to be to great if they have been brought up at the higher temperature.

What you are suggesting sound ok to me. They would survive for a few weeks at 23 degrees C but would eventually suffer from the constant high temperatures. 23 is at the very top of their temperature range.

Thanks for reply - I may go back and ask to speak to the manager and show him some of the care sheets i have printed out highlighting the temperatures that these are normally kept at.

Tbh honest with you mate, I doubt whether the manager will pay much attention to their proper requirements. It`s worth a try, but I bet he`ll be more concerned with selling them before they pop their clogs - especially with it being a garden centre.

True, but I'll give it a try. Problem I've got is its the only place near me that gets the Japanese FB newts in stock. One other place offered to do a 'one off' order for some but for a minimum quantity of eight. I only want three or four.

are they japanese or chinese fire bellys, studys show japanese have a higher tollerance to high temps than chinese therefore are less likely to have any lasting negaltive effects if kept at higher temps for a short amount of time. both shouldnt have any permentent negalive effects from being kept at 23C for a few weeks but japanese are more likely to ride it out better than chinese

but they should be fine as long as long as u give them time to adjust
