Question tortoises...

Hi,

I currently have some bearded dragons and i went to my friends house yesterday.

In his living room, he had a plastic container and 2 tortoises in there.

They were quite small and they had a salad dish and a lamp with a bulb - like a desk lamo but close on them - and he turns it on every morning and off each night.

These are the kind of tortoises id like to get to my reptile collection - but what species would they be? cause other tortoises ive seen have a UV bulb etc...

Thanks

Ben

I'm no tortoise expert but I know enough to say he is keeping them totally wrongly. All tortoises need uv for a start. My advice is to post this on the shelled section of the forum - you will get better and more specific advice there. Not everyone looks on the newbie section.

I don't know if your friend has resolved this or not. But his housing for his turtles sounds completely innapropiate. His turtles need UV and probaly more heat than a desk lamp.

Red face Hi there!

His tortoises will get what is called soft shell without UV light. You must give him a slap and tell him to get UV strip light.

Yes please slap him, UVB is essentail in order to convert the calcium. If they are getting calcium in their diet

You can buy combined bulbs but they are quite large and 100-160w but they are heat and UVB in one.
